Heather Chenoweth

Heather Chenoweth joined Íøºì±¬ÁÏ in December of 2022 as the Microscopy Facility Director for the Science Center. Her primary responsibilities include maintaining the College’s research microscopes and 300+ teaching microscopes. She works with faculty and staff to coordinate the use of microscopes in both the science and humanities curriculum and supports the research needs of faculty and students with training and consultation across multiple disciplines. Heather also assists with the restoration and maintenance of the College’s natural history collections and offers several opportunities for students to engage in microscope-based experiential learning opportunities.

Prior to joining the technical staff at Mount Holyoke, Heather completed a Master’s and PhD at UMass Amherst in Polymer Science and Engineering. Her doctoral work focused on the development of streamlined fabrication processes for multi-phasic and anisotropic polymer micro- and nanoparticles. Additionally, she gained extensive experience using electron microscopes to characterize soft materials.

Heather has an unusual professional background that began with a BA in Social Work with an emphasis on Child Welfare and a decade long career in municipal Parks and Recreation on the Gulf Coast of Florida. With a massive career shift, she returned to school and earned a BS in Chemistry, leaving the Gulf Coast to pursue a doctorate in more temperate climes. Her varied experience and skills span facility and staff management, administration, outreach and organizing, educational programming, synthetic organic chemistry, instrumental analysis, polymer physics, surface science, and microscopy. She brings all this and more to her work with the students, staff, and faculty at Íøºì±¬ÁÏ as a resource to the College and broader community.
